Secret to Success:

"Keep a close eye on your financials, be careful with both growth and spending - but have fun and do the things you love!"
John & Patricia Gean, Protown Glass & Body

John Gean loves cars, trucks and just about anything on wheels. He's been working on vehicles most of his life and has turned his passion into his reward with the business he owns with his wife, Patricia.

Protown Glass & Body, Inc. is a full-line auto body shop featuring state of the art equipment and highly skilled, quality workmanship. John began his shop in his garage as a one-person home-based business and has expanded to a new facility that added 4,000 square feet and an additional full-time employee to the business. It also brought a lot more business, with sales nearly doubling after the move. In 2004, annual sales were $216,000. The forecast for 2006 is just over $400,000. The new facility brought new technology to the shop including hydraulic lifts, a paint booth and more restoration and custom work on all types of vehicles. He also offers towing services and collision repair, paintless dent repair and auto glass replacement. "We're always updating our skills to continue to provide the best service to our customers." The new shop is located in downtown Protection. It has easy access for all kinds of vehicles and includes a retail store. He has remodeled the interior of the retail area to include office space and storage in addition to his retail area.

John approached the GCCC KSBDC through the Comanche County Economic Development office. He worked with his consultant to build historical financial statements and future projections to better understand the direction he wanted his business to grow. Since their initial meetings they've also worked on advertising, promotion and marketing the business. "We intend to continue to work with the KSBDC - they're a great resource for us and we believe that any small business could benefit from their services. Further expansion is planned and I know the KSBDC will be there to assist us."

"The KSBDC is always there to answer our questions and help us brainstorm new ideas. The expertise we've found there has helped us to grow our business to a whole new level."
